In Ordered Liberty, Kervin provides a rich collection of key worship and historical documents that have shaped United Church liturgical practice since 1925. His short but thoughtful introductions to each document, as well as the essays in the second part of the book, give a sense of the concerns and tensions of each era. Anyone wanting to learn more about not only the United Church’s practice of worship but also the denomination’s history would be well served to begin here. (Posted on 2012-05-07)

Kervin’s gifts as teacher, scholar, and worship leader shine through in this splendid collection. I found myself imaging how one could design a course for either a congregational study group or theological college classroom using these well-selected documents. In the stimulating introductions that accompany the readings he guides us along the United Church’s liturgical journey, drawing attention to its past accomplishments and plotting a route for those who care about its future. We have really needed this book for years! Readable, fascinating, and drawing from a broad ranges of sources (from the 1925 Inaugural Service right up to A Song of Faith and More Voices), this volume captures the heart and soul of worship in The United Church of Canada. William Kervin draws together a rich variety of witnesses who show us the development of our denomination’s liturgical life over the last 85 years. This is an essential, enlightening read for anyone who studies or is interested in worship. I am eager to get it into the hands of our students and beyond. (Posted on 2012-05-07)
