  1. This is not dry political memoir but engaging, informative, passionate record of key issues Canadians should care about, written by a witness/participant. Review by Jennifer

I attended a recent talk by Bill Blaikie in Calgary and picked up The Blaikie Report there. I was at the talk by accident - I'd turned up expecting to hear a different speaker. Turned out to be the best mistake I've made in a long time. Blaikie is an impressive speaker. I've just finished reading his book, and can testify that everything said in the reviews included with the book is true. This is not dry political memoir but engaging, informative, passionate record of key issues Canadians should care about, written by a witness/participant. It's lit a fire and left me with a better understanding of why I should care too, and why I need to 'Vote, dammit!' (to crudely paraphrase one of the messages in his talk here...or in the case of politics in Alberta, 'Vote anyways, dammit!'). The social gospel infusion adds depth to the discussion that I appreciate as a person of faith -- and am also challenged by, to live as a person of faith. Thanks to everyone who helped bring this book into existence. I've bought a loaner copy to encourage as many as I can convince to read it too.

"The Blaikie Report is a story worth telling, and Blaikie tells it well. For three decades at the intersection of faith and politics, Bill Blaikie has accrued a wealth of knowledge and insight which he shares with clarity and grace. His story captures the changes in the public arena over three tumultuous decades. This is essential reading for students of parliamentary democracy and people of any and all faiths who wish to learn how to walk the walk. (Posted on 2012-05-07)

Throughout his impressive parliamentary career, Bill Blaikie stood tall among his political peers as an ethical and intellectual force to be reckoned with. This fascinating book is more than a chronicle of past events—it is a moral compass for those who aspire to practise principled politics in a complex and challenging world. (Posted on 2012-05-07)

This is a book I have been waiting for. Bill Blaikie has occupied a unique position on the faith and political landscape for over 30 years. I have always admired his unabashed and unapologetic rooting of his politics in his faith and the Social Gospel tradition.... This book is a wonderful weaving together of political insight, fascinating personal stories, and theological analysis. With humility and clarity, Bill casts a special light on the past 35 years of Canadian history. For people who care about Canadian politics and the role of one's faith, this book will inform, refresh, inspire, and challenge. It is a very special gift to all Canadians. (Posted on 2012-05-07)
